Major banks and U.S. Postal Service offices will be closed on Monday, Feb. 19 in observance of George Washington’s birthday, a holiday more commonly known as Presidents Day. As the next federal holiday after Presidents Day is not until May, many individuals will have to wait until the week before the end of another three-day weekend.
The date of Presidents Day changes every year as a result a Uniform Holiday Bill signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The bill mandates that three holidays, including Presidents Day, happen on Mondays to prevent mid-week shutdowns and instead provide long weekends for the federal calendar. On this Presidents Day, Postal service facilities will be closed for retail transactions and mail will not be delivered. Additionally, branches of major banks such as Wells Fargo, Citibank, Bank of America and Truist will also be closed. On the other hand, UPS is set to be open on Monday with pickup and delivery services available, while FedEx will also be open and operating with the exception of FedEx Ground Economy deliveries, which may experience delays due to the USPS holiday.
Retailers such as Costco, Walmart and Target, as well as most major retailers, grocers and restaurants, are open on the holiday. So, while some services are closed, the holiday will still offer opportunities for shopping and dining for those looking for alternatives.
