Before Stardom, Chappell Roan Scored Music for This Horror Short

Date:

Anna Diop, known for her gripping performance in the 2022 film Nanny, also starred in another horror film that same year titled Posies. This short film, directed by Rachel Stavis, garnered positive reviews following its initial release. Currently, Posies is being re-promoted on the horror streaming service Alter, largely due to the involvement of pop star Chappell Roan, who composed its score prior to the release of her successful 2023 album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Additionally, Roan’s 2018 song “Bitter” is featured in the film.

Posies revolves around a haunting premise: as people start to devolve into monsters, a woman attempts to conceal her transformation by placing flowers under her skin. The trailer for the film is available for viewing below.

Rachel Stavis, the writer and co-director of Posies—who also describes herself as a "non-denominational exorcist"—shared her thoughts in a press release about Roan’s contribution to the film. She expressed her satisfaction with Roan’s musical creativity, highlighting the emotional and atmospheric depth brought to the score through Roan’s vocal talents. Stavis noted that Roan’s work on the score was virtually perfect from the first attempt, praising her storytelling ability through music, which she considers one of the most remarkable and unforgettable elements of the film. Stavis conveyed her gratitude for Roan’s involvement just before the singer’s rise to mainstream fame.

By 2022, Chappell Roan was on the verge of the significant fame she now enjoys, with her hits like “Good Luck, Babe!” and “Hot to Go!” gaining popularity on pop radio. Roan has also been making headlines for her performances at various music festivals. Recently, it was announced that she will make her musical debut on Saturday Night Live in the show’s upcoming 50th season. While Roan initially planned to pursue an acting career, she has since focused on her music, as discussed in a recent interview, indicating that an acting role might not be in her immediate future.

Posies will be available in its entirety on Alter’s YouTube platform starting October 9.
