Monument Valley 3 Expands Boundaries with a Sailboat Addition

Date:

During Netflix’s Geeked Week event, additional insights about Monument Valley 3 were shared. Developer Ustwo Games highlighted that the long-awaited sequel expands upon its predecessors in various aspects, notably in gameplay, art style, and narrative.

A significant alteration in Monument Valley 3 is the integration of sailing mechanics. Players will have the ability to maneuver a boat in nearly any direction, which signifies a departure from the geometric confines of previous titles. During a call with reporters, Game Director Jennifer Estaris mentioned that, along with cubes that allow the new protagonist Noor to shift to different planes, the game is largely about "deconstructing what we know."

These changes lead to novel puzzles and visuals as players navigate architecturally impossible spaces inspired by MC Escher. Correspondingly, Ustwo has refined the art style to feature softer and more abstract shapes, suitable for navigating rivers. The outcome is a familiar yet uniquely different visual experience. Additionally, the game’s soundtrack, performed by an 18-piece orchestra, aims to evoke emotional responses from players.

The narrative themes for Monument Valley 3 focus on hope, togetherness, and resilience. Noor, the protagonist, is a lighthouse keeper’s apprentice who must find a new power source before the world’s light diminishes. According to Ustwo Marketing Manager Jamie Wotton, this installment presents the "most ambitious story" in the Monument Valley series.

All three Monument Valley titles are standalone games with independent storylines, enabling new players to start with Monument Valley 3 without needing to play the previous entries. However, the earlier games can also be enjoyed separately and are available to those with a Netflix subscription, free of ads and in-app purchases.

Monument Valley is accessible to Netflix subscribers on both iOS and Android from today, with its sequel launching on the service on October 29. Monument Valley 3 is slated to debut as a Netflix mobile exclusive on December 10.

In other announcements during Geeked Week, Netflix revealed additional mobile gaming updates. A multiplayer variant of Battleship featuring special weapons and ranked modes will be released on September 24. Subscribers will soon have access to Civilization IV and Street Fighter IV CE on mobile devices at no extra cost. The Netflix version of Street Fighter IV CE will support cross-play between iOS and Android.

Furthermore, Netflix offered another preview of Squid Game: Unleashed prior to its release later this year. A first look at Blood Line: A Rebel Moon Game, based on Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon movies, was also shared. This Netflix-exclusive co-op action game from developer Super Evil Megacorp is expected to debut in 2025.
