New macOS Sequoia update conflicts with VPNs and Crowdstrike cybersecurity tools

Date:

Apple is marking a significant week as the new iPhone 16 lineup becomes available in stores, accompanied by the release of the new AirPods 4. These product launches follow closely on the heels of the release of iOS 18 and macOS 15, also known as macOS Sequoia.

However, Mac users have reported compatibility issues with cybersecurity tools after upgrading to macOS Sequoia. According to TechCrunch, these users are experiencing disruptions in their cybersecurity software’s functionality when paired with the new operating system.

The conflicts with macOS Sequoia were highlighted after some users reported network connection problems on social media platforms. It has been observed that the issues are resolved when users disable cybersecurity tools from companies such as Microsoft, CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, and ESET.

Further, BleepingComputer identified problems with VPN usage on macOS Sequoia. The cybersecurity news outlet referenced a change in macOS Sequoia’s release notes, mentioning the removal of a firewall feature that may have caused these disruptions. This firewall alteration also seems to be affecting the Firefox web browser for some users.

Disabling antivirus software or firewalls is not recommended as a permanent fix. Consequently, companies like CrowdStrike and SentinelOne are advising users to avoid upgrading to macOS Sequoia until the issues are addressed.

Although not all Mac users may face these specific problems, it is crucial to recognize that new software releases can encounter initial glitches. Users should verify compatibility with their essential applications before upgrading.

Apple has been contacted for comment, and any updates will be incorporated into this report.
