Meta has been progressively enhancing Threads’ compatibility with the fediverse over the past year. The company is now introducing a significant update that allows users to access more detailed information about their followers and interactions with individuals from other servers within the fediverse.
Previously, Threads featured replies from Mastodon and other servers and notified users about likes on their posts from various fediverse applications. However, there was no functionality for Threads users to access details about their followers from these services. This is set to change, as Adam Mosseri outlined in a recent post.
With the new update, individuals who have enabled fediverse sharing on Threads will be able to view a comprehensive list of their followers from other servers and access their profiles. This enhancement aims to provide Threads users with a better understanding of their reach and audience across platforms like Mastodon and others.
Despite these improvements, Threads’ support for the fediverse remains somewhat restricted. Users are still unable to reply to responses originating from external applications, and there is no functionality to search for users on other servers through Threads. Additionally, there is a delay in cross-posting; it will now take 15 minutes for a post from Threads to appear, as Meta has also extended the edit window for posts.
Meanwhile, third-party developers are facilitating multi-platform posting for users of decentralized services. A new application named Croissant allows cross-posting to Threads, Mastodon, and Bluesky simultaneously. This paid app, initially reported by TechCrunch, seeks to offer functionality similar to enterprise social media management tools like Buffer.
