Casio Brings Back CES 2021’s Fluffiest Robot

Date:

Casio has announced that it is accepting pre-orders in Japan for Moflin, a robotic plushie with artificial intelligence “emotional capabilities,” which made its debut at CES 2021. Developed in collaboration with the Japanese startup Vanguard Industries, Moflin is designed to function as an emotional support pet. The robotic companion specializes in snuggling and is said to possess a unique personality, reacting to situations with mood changes and forming attachments to individuals over time.

The Moflin is available in gray and blonde variants at a price of ¥59,400, approximately $400, and is expected to be shipped on November 7. As of now, there is no information regarding its availability outside Japan.

Beyond responding to cuddles, Moflin is also designed to interact through conversation, with movements and endearing sounds shaping its character. According to Masahiko Yamanaka, the founder of Vanguard, the robot has the capacity to learn, with its personality evolving based on its treatment. Moflin is equipped with Bluetooth capabilities to connect with an app and charges in a designated nest to maintain the illusion of being a real pet. While charging, the robot enters a sleep mode. Additionally, its fur is removable for cleaning purposes.

Vanguard Industries successfully campaigned for Moflin on Kickstarter and Indiegogo in 2020, although distribution to backers only commenced in late 2023. Casio now manages the manufacturing and distribution of this innovative robotic plushie.
