Nissan’s All-Electric Sporty Hatchback EV: Leading Europe’s EV Ambitions

Date:

Nissan’s London design team has created a compact non-production electric hatchback called Concept 20-23. The vehicle features circle daytime-running lights and is specifically designed for the European market. Under its “Ambition 2030” plan, Nissan aims to introduce 19 new electric vehicles globally and prioritize the European market, which accounts for a third of its global EV sales. Currently, Nissan only sells hybrid and electric models in Europe, including the non-plugin hybrid Qashqai crossover, the compact SUV X-Trail, the Ariya EV, and the Townstar electric van. The automaker’s upcoming EVs in Europe include an electric version of the Micra and another yet-to-be-revealed car to be manufactured in the UK.

To support its goal of an all-electric lineup, Nissan plans to reduce battery costs by 65% by 2028. This includes transitioning to lower-cost chemistries that do not use cobalt. Additionally, Nissan intends to launch solid-state batteries that can significantly reduce EV charging time and bring down battery costs to $75 per kWh. In comparison, batteries for EVs produced at scale in 2022 cost around $153 per kWh. Nissan previously announced a $17.6 billion investment over five years to accelerate its global EV development.

Despite its promises for an all-electric lineup, Nissan has made limited progress in the EV market. While the automaker led the way with the Nissan Leaf, it has not showcased significant advancements beyond the Ariya SUV. However, stakeholders hope to see more of Nissan’s promised new EVs in the near future that go beyond concept convertibles.
