OpenAI and The Washington Post have recently announced a content partnership, where ChatGPT will summarize and link to The Post’s original reporting in its responses.
This collaboration is part of OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to establish media partnerships, having already formed agreements with over 20 news publishers, including The Guardian and Axios.
The Washington Post anticipates gaining access to ChatGPT’s extensive audience, which now exceeds 500 million users. In return, OpenAI expects to enhance the quality of its responses through The Post’s “timely, well-sourced reporting,” as mentioned in their press release.
The financial terms of this partnership have not been disclosed, and The Washington Post declined to provide details when asked. OpenAI has not yet offered a comment on the matter.
While some newsrooms have welcomed collaborations with OpenAI, not all are in favor. For instance, The New York Times has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing it of using its copyrighted material without permission, an allegation that OpenAI denies.
