10 Years of Apple Watch: A Decade of Progress

Date:

Each year, Apple introduces a significant health feature, progressing from VO2 Max measurement on the Series 3 to the ECG sensor on the Series 4, culminating in sleep apnea notifications on the Series 10. In a previous interview with WIRED, Apple CEO Tim Cook suggested that when viewed retrospectively, Apple’s most substantial contribution would be in the health sector.

Despite these advancements, the Series 10 and Watch Ultra 2 lack blood oxygen measuring capabilities due to a patent dispute with medtech company Masimo. Apple has invested in research to enhance the Apple Watch’s utility for individuals with chronic conditions, exploring noninvasive blood glucose monitoring for diabetics and blood pressure measurement for those with hypertension. However, despite promising developments, these features have not yet been realized.

Apple is currently working on an AI-assisted comprehensive health service. However, it trails behind other health manufacturers like Oura and Whoop, as well as Garmin. For instance, users of the Oura Ring 4 already have the capability to document meals through its Meals feature, a function that Apple Watch users cannot yet access due to the absence of a camera and the limited capabilities of Apple’s Visual Intelligence, which is restricted to the iPhone 16.

Nonetheless, the widespread use of the Apple Watch has established a history of saving lives by detecting irregular heart rhythms through the ECG feature or calling emergency services when a user falls or is involved in a serious accident. Anecdotal evidence includes instances where, prior to the removal of the blood oxygen feature, users were alerted to critical health issues such as pneumonia through their watch’s alerts.

Historically, Apple has not always been the pioneer in introducing new health features, yet it is known for following swiftly and ensuring the functionality of its innovations. According to Naranjo, Apple users tend to be patient, believing that the company does not prematurely release features without ensuring near-perfection.

Research supports this notion. In 2022, almost 80% of Apple iPhone owners also possessed an Apple Watch, and it constituted 56% of smartwatch sales in the North American market. Importantly, many Apple Watch users report high levels of satisfaction with their devices.

Most Apple Watch users are already part of the Apple ecosystem, which enhances the device’s appeal through seamless integration. The watch is intuitive and user-friendly, offering a pleasurable experience over time. The digital crown on the device remains a practical tool for navigating small menus without obstructing the screen.
