At the Harlem Parish on Tuesday night, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft acquired a valuable Tom Brady card at Sotheby’s “Holy Grails” auction for $120,000. The card is a 2000 Playoff Contenders Rookie Ticket BGC, graded 9.5 and autographed by Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion.
The auction included four Brady cards that collectively sold for a total of $813,600. This event was the first since Sotheby’s and Fanatics announced their partnership in June. Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin noted that around 300 bidders attended the auction. He remarked on the unique blend of art and sports represented by trading cards, describing the collaboration between Sotheby’s and Fanatics as a natural fit.
The standout item of the auction was a rare 1955 Topps Roberto Clemente Rookie Card PSA 9, which sold for $840,000, making it the most valuable card of the evening. Additionally, a Shohei Ohtani card fetched $336,000, setting a new record for a card of the soon-to-be three-time MVP.
Kraft’s purchase of the Brady card comes amidst a seemingly mended relationship between the team owner and Brady following the quarterback’s exit from New England. Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020 after spending 20 seasons with the Patriots.
Earlier this year, Brady, Kraft, and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick appeared together for Brady’s induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame. During his tenure with New England, Brady secured six Super Bowl victories and earned five MVP Awards.
