On April 2, 2025, an article was published discussing the continued silence of Black MAGA supporters during the second presidency of Donald Trump, despite instances of bigotry exhibited by Trump and J.D. Vance during their campaign. One such instance occurred during a rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where derogatory remarks were made regarding Puerto Rico. Additionally, the controversial Confederate anthem “Dixie” was played as Representative Byron Donalds, Trump’s prominent Black supporter, took the stage. Despite criticism on social media, Black MAGA supporters appeared indifferent to these incidents.
As Trump and Vance spread false and racist narratives about Haitians during the campaign, Black MAGA supporters remained silent. This silence persisted into Trump’s second term as he implemented policies perceived as autocratic and white-nationalist.
Throughout his second administration, Trump has focused on opposing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), issuing executive orders that roll back civil rights advancements and eliminate DEI programs within the federal government. His administration has also pushed for the removal of birthright citizenship and the deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants.
Trump’s policies have included an executive order allowing Afrikaners to seek asylum in the U.S., claiming they face racial discrimination in South Africa. Meanwhile, he pardoned white supremacists involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot and has targeted Black agency with support from his congressional allies.
Despite a history of exclusion from significant participation, some Black Republicans have continued to support Trump’s administration. Prominent figures like Byron Donalds have publicly opposed DEI initiatives, while other Black supporters hosted events celebrating Trump, such as the Black History Month celebration at the White House, where his controversial anti-DEI stance was not addressed.
Trump’s latest cabinet largely excludes Black Republicans, with Scott Turner being the sole Black cabinet member as HUD Secretary. Meanwhile, prominent Black supporters have remained relatively silent about Trump’s policies and have participated in events that appear to ignore ongoing controversies tied to his administration.
Overall, the silence of Black MAGA supporters is noted to persist amidst ongoing criticisms of Trump’s racially charged policies, while his support among Black voters remains comparatively low.
