DNC to proceed with Biden virtual nomination; voting to start after August 1.

Date:

The Democratic National Committee has decided to move forward with their plan to virtually nominate President Joe Biden ahead of the Democratic convention in Chicago, despite calls from some party officials to reconsider. The committee is scheduled to meet and discuss the steps and timeline for virtually nominating Biden, with no virtual voting to begin before August 1. This decision comes in response to concerns raised within the party about potentially fast-tracking the nomination process.

House Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have been lobbying for a delay in the virtual roll call vote, expressing doubts about Biden’s ability to defeat Donald Trump in November. However, DNC co-chair Tim Walz defended the virtual nomination process, emphasizing the importance of securing ballot access in key states for the upcoming election. Despite the growing faction of Democrats calling for a slowdown, the committee remains committed to finalizing the nominee before the convention begins.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, the first House member to publicly call for Biden to drop out, continues to push for the DNC to drop the virtual roll call plans. Some members, like Rep. Jared Huffman, have expressed concerns about the virtual vote, labeling it as a “terrible idea” and advocating for a reconsideration of Biden’s nomination. The pressure from party members has led to a successful delay in the virtual roll call vote, showing a split within the Democratic Party over the nomination process for the upcoming election.
