Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy has mandated that the company’s employees return to office work for five days a week starting in January. This move follows a previous requirement where employees were expected to badge in at least three days a week, with the specifics varying by team requirements. Exceptions will be made for extenuating circumstances or for positions that have already been approved for full remote work, as per Jassy’s communication to employees on Monday.
Jassy highlighted that this change may necessitate adjustments for some employees who have organized their personal lives around a more flexible work schedule. This message was also shared on Amazon’s corporate blog, emphasizing the company’s commitment to this new directive.
Additionally, Jassy addressed the need to streamline management and reduce bureaucracy within the company, which has expanded significantly over the past decade. Reports of excessive deliberation on memos, unnecessary meetings, and multiple layers of approval have increased, hindering efficiency.
To combat this, each major organization within Amazon will be required to improve the ratio of individual contributors to managers by 15% by the end of March 2025. Furthermore, a bureaucracy tipline has been established for employees to voice concerns about redundant processes.
Jassy stressed the importance of continually maintaining a strong workplace culture, noting that it requires ongoing effort.
