Ford has issued a recall for nearly 25,000 of its trucks due to a potential malfunction in the rearview camera system. The issue, according to the automaker, may occur if water enters the Tailgate Park Assist Sensor Interface Module, affecting the rearview camera image display on 24,950 units of its 2023-2024 F-250, F-350, and F-450 models.
Each affected vehicle is equipped with a tailgate top camera, which provides additional images when the tailgate is down and is separate from the primary rearview camera. This information was included in a recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on October 25. The report also identified the problem as originating from “certain mating interfaces” of the tailgate top camera being “out of tolerance” and the camera bracket’s ability to “retain water” during use.
This malfunction could result in the rearview camera image appearing as “blue or black” or functioning only intermittently, thereby posing a safety risk by reducing driver visibility. However, Ford has reported that no accidents or injuries have been linked to this issue.
To address the problem, Ford has arranged for the owners of the affected models to have the tailgate top camera, wire harness, and TPASIM module replaced at no cost at Ford or Lincoln dealerships. The “Image Processing Module A” will receive a software update as part of the repair process. Additionally, pick-up and delivery services will be available at participating dealerships, and Ford is exploring other methods to ensure the recall process is convenient for customers.
Owners of the affected Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450 models can expect to receive a recall notification letter by early December. The company reported over 853,400 truck sales in the U.S. this year as of early last month.
