Hegseth Warns of Imminent Chinese Military Action Against Taiwan

Date:

The White House Watch newsletter offers guidance on the implications of a second term for Trump’s administration on Washington, business, and global affairs.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a warning about the potential imminence of a Chinese military attack on Taiwan, urging Indo-Pacific allies to increase defense spending to deter Beijing. He addressed the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue defense forum in Singapore, emphasizing China’s ambitions to become a hegemonic power in Asia, which should serve as a critical wake-up call.

Hegseth stated that any attempt by China to conquer Taiwan would have severe consequences for the Indo-Pacific region and the world. He highlighted the reality and possible immediacy of the threat, although he expressed hope that it would not materialize.

Intelligence officials and military officers have noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping instructed the military to develop the capability to invade Taiwan by 2027. Although there is concern about China’s military escalation, an attack is not considered imminent by most officials.

During his visit to Asia, Hegseth encouraged regional allies to emulate Europe in pledging increased defense spending, noting the urgency of the situation. He argued that it is unreasonable for European countries to boost their defense budgets while key Asian allies spend less amid a substantial threat from China, as well as North Korea.

Hegseth pointed out the strategic advantage posed by America’s network of allies, urging them to enhance their own defenses rapidly. He affirmed the U.S. commitment to its Indo-Pacific allies, pledging ongoing support and collaboration.

Under President Donald Trump, the U.S. policy focuses on “achieving peace through strength,” particularly by deterring aggression in the Indo-Pacific, identified as the administration’s priority region. Although Hegseth criticized Joe Biden for weakening America, he acknowledged that many initiatives in Asia continue policies from the previous administration.

In his initial significant address as defense secretary, Hegseth clarified that the U.S. does not seek conflict with China but will not allow the subordination of its allies and partners. He accused China of deploying cyber capabilities to target critical infrastructure and harassing neighbors, including Taiwan, in the South China Sea.

He noted that Xi has instructed the People’s Liberation Army to prepare for a Taiwan invasion by 2027, with ongoing daily training and rehearsal for such an operation.

Hegseth warned against economic dependence on China, as it complicates decision-making during tensions or conflict. His comments followed a speech by French President Emmanuel Macron, who advocated for a “coalition of action” between Asian and European countries amidst U.S.-China competition.

Hegseth underscored U.S. commitment to the Indo-Pacific by highlighting the presence of American officials at the forum, contrasting it with the absence of China’s defense minister, Admiral Dong Jun.
