Pope Francis has expressed in his final testament a desire to be interred at Rome’s Basilica of Saint Mary Major, rather than the traditional burial site for many previous popes, St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The Vatican made public his final testament on Monday evening following his death earlier that day at the age of 88. In the testament, it is specified that Francis requested a burial “in the ground, without particular decoration,” with a simple inscription of his papal name in Latin: Franciscus.
