The first three episodes of Andor season two have been released on Disney+, presenting a swift return to the initial stages of the Star Wars rebellion. In an interview with io9, showrunner Tony Gilroy and actress Genevieve O’Reilly, who portrays Mon Mothma, discussed the concluding scenes of the third episode and how the concept of structuring pivotal years into three-episode mini-movies was developed.
Initially, Andor was intended to span five seasons, with each season representing one year. However, this approach evolved into creating arcs consisting of three episodes each. When questioned about the need for extensive backstory development, Gilroy explained that although there was a need for certain details, much of the transition between episodes was self-explanatory, and he rarely had to provide additional context.
O’Reilly shared her experience of finding Mon Mothma’s character amid these foundational years of rebellion, noting the significance of the scenes set in her character’s ancestral home. The rich family dynamics and interactions over these three days, especially with her daughter and Luthen’s presence, brought depth to her character’s journey.
The second season opens with the character Tay Colma, previously established as a strong ally in season one, displaying noticeable changes. Mon Mothma perceives these changes, understanding them as a potential threat, while Luthen offers a more critical viewpoint, encouraging her to confront the harsher realities of rebellion, both symbolically and literally.
Tony Gilroy commented on the artistic approach of intercutting various scenes, such as Cassian’s heroics and Mon Mothma’s internal struggle, all set against a unique electronic dance music backdrop. This technique, he explained, enhances audience connection to the character, binding them to Mon’s dual experience of public celebration and private turmoil.
Andor is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
