In the conclusion of this week’s episode arc on Andor, the character K-2SO was introduced. In a development from adversaries to allies on the streets of Palmo, Cassian, portrayed by Diego Luna, is rescued from a KX droid that ends up being run over. Cassian then takes the parts back to Yavin.
Upon discovering that Bix is missing, Cassian and Draven observe the reprogramming of the KX droid on a metal bed, evoking a Frankenstein theme. K-2SO awakens, questioning why a gun is pointed at him, in the recognizable voice of actor Alan Tudyk.
However, the initial plan for K-2SO’s introduction was significantly different. Tony Gilroy shared with Entertainment Weekly that Dan Gilroy had crafted a remarkable, stand-alone episode, episode 209, which resembled a horror movie. The episode involved a large tanker ship brought to Yavin, with a KX unit trapped inside, creating a monster movie atmosphere with K2.
Ultimately, budget constraints prevented this version from being realized. Gilroy mentioned that, despite preserving some horror elements in the episode with K-2SO’s dramatic revival, expanding the storyline was not feasible. The team had to abandon the original plan and consolidate the episode’s elements.
