For those who are not dedicated keyboard enthusiasts or gamers with custom-built keyboards, the typical experience involves using a standard keyboard picked up from a retailer like Best Buy without much thought. The primary concern is its functionality to get through daily tasks. However, the company Nuio, co-founded by Tom and Greg Wilson, aims to elevate the typical keyboard experience with their innovative product, the Flow Keyboard—a high-end, fully wireless, ergonomic, split keyboard.
Tom and Greg Wilson, through their company specializing in ergonomic accessories, have developed a comprehensive ecosystem centered around the Flow Keyboard. Alongside the split keyboard, Nuio provides a variety of premium magnetic attachments that include a trackpad, deskpad, adjustable stands, and wrist pads. All these components, which are sold separately, allow users to customize their setup for maximum comfort. The wireless nature of the full setup permits its use in various environments, whether at a desk, during a flight, or on one’s lap.
While the Flow Keyboard may initially appear as another split keyboard, Nuio has worked to redefine the “standard” keyboard by personalizing elements ranging from the base shape to the individual keys. The keyboard’s innovative design has already altered perceptions about everyday keyboard use even in its early testing phase. The Flow Keyboard can be preordered from Nuio’s website, starting at $399, with shipments commencing on December 1.
Nuio was established by Tom Wilson, who serves as CEO, and Greg Wilson, the CMO, both of whom possess extensive backgrounds in design and technology. Tom Wilson is a former Apple executive with experience in developing the company’s portable devices, such as MacBooks, while Greg Wilson has been a designer at the prestigious Frog Design firm, and previously managed his own consultancy.
When the Wilson brothers began to conceive ideas for their new venture, they aimed to innovate a product that had seen little change over time. Given Tom’s expertise in hardware components, they selected the keyboard as their focus. Greg Wilson mentioned during a virtual briefing that their objective was to revolutionize the keyboard, which had remained largely unchanged for decades, retaining its traditional rectangular form—a design originally intended for typewriters.
In designing the Flow Keyboard, the Wilson brothers consciously deviated from the customary rectangular shape, opting instead for a form that adapts to the natural resting position of a user’s hands. The result is a 3D wave design with contoured keys that are intended to conform to and embrace the user’s fingertips. Both the enclosure and the keys are uniquely produced and proprietary to Nuio.
