In the previous month, Deezer reported its inaugural positive cash flow for the year 2024, representing a crucial milestone in the company’s history. As the music streaming service approaches profitability, it is introducing new features to set itself apart in the highly competitive industry.
On Wednesday, Deezer announced a series of new features designed to provide users with a more personalized experience. These enhancements include a customizable algorithm, monthly recaps, universal sharing, among others.
Deezer places significant emphasis on its custom algorithm, which stands out by allowing users to fully tailor their recommendations without limitations. Starting this month, users will have the ability to manually adjust suggested songs, playlists, albums, and artists, thereby having complete control over their music discovery journey.
While rival platforms such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, and YouTube Music permit users to dislike or hide songs to prevent them from being suggested, Deezer advances further by enabling users to completely exclude songs, artists, or entire playlists and albums through the newly introduced “Manage My Recommendations” feature.
Additionally, Deezer has included a new “dislike” button alongside the existing “like” capability. Users can now indicate their disapproval of a song by selecting a heart symbol crossed out, signaling to the algorithm that they no longer wish to receive recommendations for that track.
Other upcoming features aimed at enhancing customization include options to personalize playlist covers with various colors and stickers, and tailor the Favorites tab to highlight preferred albums or artists for quicker access. These features are scheduled to launch next month.
Deezer also unveiled a new monthly recap feature named “My Deezer Month,” designed to complement its yearly wrap-up, “My Deezer Year.”
Beginning in early May, users will be able to view monthly statistics, such as their top songs, artists, and genres in addition to summaries of their activity, like comparisons of total listening minutes with the previous month and total hours spent on their top three genres.
This area presents a challenge for Deezer, as Spotify remains the leading platform for yearly recaps. Although Apple Music launched a monthly version of its Replay feature last year, it is uncertain if Deezer’s effort can match its popularity. The company reported a 30% rise in the utilization of “My Deezer Year” at the start of 2025.
Moreover, Deezer announced a universal sharing feature. This feature allows users to share a song with friends, who are directed to Deezer’s website, where they can access multiple links to other services where the song is available, including Spotify and Apple Music. This ensures that even those without a Deezer account can listen to the artist and appreciate the music. Universal sharing is set to be launched in late April.
Despite being on the verge of profitability, Deezer experienced a slight decrease in subscribers, dropping from 10 million in 2023 to 9.7 million in 2024. In comparison, Spotify boasts over 675 million monthly active users, including 263 million paying subscribers.
