Using an Eero mesh system without the Eero Plus subscription restricts users to basic features such as scheduling Wi-Fi downtime, establishing a guest network, and utilizing the Eero as a smart home hub. While these features may suffice for many, the subscription offers additional benefits.
Previously, Eero provided a two-tiered subscription model. Eero Secure was available for $3 per month or $30 annually, offering advanced security, content filtering, ad-blocking, activity insights, and VIP support. Eero Secure+ cost $10 per month or $100 annually, which included third-party applications like 1Password, Encrypt.me, and Malwarebytes, along with DDNS for remote network access.
Currently, some internet service providers still offer Eero Secure. However, the general option is the rebranded Eero Plus, which includes all the aforementioned features for $10 per month or $100 per year. Additionally, the subscription now provides Internet Backup, enabling the addition of secondary backup networks, such as alternative Wi-Fi or hotspot connections, to use if the primary network fails.
Eero Plus is relatively costly, especially since features like parental controls and real-time security are often offered free of charge by other router manufacturers, such as Asus and Linksys. For those who require the bundled apps, Eero Plus might be considered valuable, yet the high cost may be difficult to justify despite being necessary for the optimal Eero experience. On the positive side, the system is known for its ease of use, and its parental controls are highly regarded. Consumers might find frequent discount offers appealing, but for those who consider the subscription too expensive, exploring different mesh systems is suggested.
