Google announced in a blog post that its AI system, Gemini, will now automatically summarize lengthy email threads for some users. Previously, users had to manually select the “Summarize this email” option for Gemini to generate key points. Now, if users have enabled smart features in Gmail, Chat, Meet, and Workspace, summaries will appear automatically in contexts where they are deemed helpful, such as long threads or exchanges with multiple replies. This feature is currently only available in English.
If Gmail is used with an administrative account, such as for a company or school, the administrator can enable or disable these smart settings. According to Google’s help page, these features are disabled by default in Europe and Japan. This development is part of Google’s broader initiative to integrate AI into all its products, including Gmail and Chrome. At its recent annual I/O event, Google announced additional AI features for Gmail, such as smart replies and meeting scheduling.
