Fans of “Game of Thrones” should prepare for another update—or a lack of one—on the status of George R.R. Martin’s much-anticipated book, “The Winds of Winter.” In a recent interview with Time, Martin was questioned about the progress of this long-awaited installment. The book has remained in a state of anticipation for more than a decade.
Time editor Jeffrey Kluger introduced his question regarding the book by referencing an online comment that humorously noted the arrival of “real dire wolves before ‘Winds of Winter.'” Although updates on the book’s release have become scarce, Martin provided some insights into his ongoing efforts and expressed understanding of readers’ impatience regarding the delay.
Martin acknowledged the book’s delay, stating, “There’s no doubt ‘Winds of Winter’ is 13 years late. I’m still working on it. I have periods where I make progress and then other things divert my attention.” He mentioned that deadlines for one of the HBO shows had been a distraction from his writing. Martin also addressed criticisms regarding his involvement in other projects, such as opening a bookstore and a theater, clarifying that these do not occupy most of his time. He assured fans that he is not directly involved in the day-to-day operations of these ventures.
Additionally, Martin referred to a recent engagement involving a “quasi-dire wolf,” which did not significantly impact his writing schedule for “The Winds of Winter.” He explained that the trip associated with this event was brief and did not interfere with his writing.
While awaiting “The Winds of Winter,” fans have content to look forward to. “House of the Dragon” season three is expected to premiere next year, and the “Dunk and Egg” series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is slated to release this summer. It is hoped that by the conclusion of these series, Martin will have more significant updates on “The Winds of Winter.”
