Goonies Cast Confirms Sequel Isn’t Happening

Date:

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been released, and its success at the box office suggests that more legacy sequels of beloved 80s films might be on the horizon. However, for those anticipating a sequel to The Goonies, recent developments indicate otherwise.

Earlier this week, a rumor circulated suggesting that Warner Bros. was planning a new Goonies movie. This rumor appeared credible as it claimed the original cast would return, Steven Spielberg would direct, and the film was slated for release between 2026 and 2027. Adding to the speculation, Sean Astin’s social media account seemed to endorse the possibility. Nonetheless, original cast members Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton have categorically denied these claims.

Corey Feldman stated via social media that he had “no info” regarding any sequel in development. Martha Plimpton was more assertive, stating on Instagram, “There’s no Goonies 2 script, there’s no one attached. Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.”

While Beetlejuice 2 has reignited interest in legacy sequels, similar hopes for a new Goonies film have persisted for years. In 2020, the original cast reunited for a virtual COVID-19 fundraiser, where Spielberg mentioned discussing potential sequel ideas with co-writer Chris Columbus, the late director Richard Donner, and producer Lauren Shuler Donner. Despite these discussions, no concrete plans materialized. Interestingly, a show inspired by The Goonies titled Our Time is currently in development, but as of now, a direct continuation remains elusive.
