Generative Erase and Remove Background are accessible at no cost; however, Image Creator requires AI credits tied to a user’s Microsoft account. These credits are provided as part of a Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscription and are not available for individual purchase. Users are advised to manage them carefully. Microsoft has introduced additional features to Notepad, traditionally a code editor, enhancing its capabilities with formatting and auto-save options. When users open Notepad in Windows, they will notice a Copilot button situated in the top-right corner.
While Copilot in Notepad doesn’t support the generation of new text like it does in other applications such as Copilot on the web or ChatGPT, it allows users to refine and modify existing text. To utilize this feature, users must first enter and select the desired text in Notepad before clicking the Copilot button.
Upon making a selection, users can click the Copilot button to access various options. These include altering the text length with “Make shorter” and “Make longer,” or adjusting the tone with “Change tone,” which can modify the text to be more inspirational, formal, casual, or humorous. Additionally, “Change format” is available to restructure the selected text into different forms such as a list, marketing language, or poetry.
For a broader set of modifications, the “Rewrite” option offers previews of restructured text. By selecting this, a pop-up window provides more choices for altering the length, tone, and format, with various versions available. Users can apply their preferred changes by clicking “Replace” to update the existing text.
Currently, Notepad users can access a limited number of AI-powered rewrites for free. Still, frequent use, similar to the Image Creator feature in Paint, requires AI credits, attainable through a Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscription.
For users who prefer not to use AI tools or want to remove the Copilot button from the interface, it can be disabled. To do this, they should click the gear icon at the top right and turn off the Copilot toggle switch.
