iOS 18 Launches Today: Check Your iPhone Compatibility and New Features

Date:

Apple has introduced its latest software update, iOS 18, available for free download on all eligible iPhones via the Software Update settings. New iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models, set to be released on September 20, will come pre-installed with iOS 18. However, not every iPhone will support the new iOS, and even compatible phones may lack some features, especially those associated with Apple Intelligence.

This stratification is not new. Each year, Apple removes some older iPhone models from the iOS eligibility list. For example, in the previous year, iOS 17 was not compatible with the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, leaving those users without access to new features. Conversely, some older hardware will gain significant updates, such as AirPods Pro, which will soon function as hearing aids following FDA authorization.

To determine if an iPhone supports iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence, users should check their device’s compatibility. Additionally, Apple has released a firmware update for AirPods Pro 2. A comprehensive list of new iOS 18 features is available in Apple’s exhaustive list in PDF form.

iPhones from the 2018 model year onwards should be compatible with iOS 18. However, devices from the 2017 model year or earlier, such as the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, will not support the latest iOS update but will continue to operate without the new features.

The new Apple Intelligence features will initially be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 16 models. These features will be rolled out starting in October and will be available in English in the U.S., with localized versions and additional language support planned for later releases. Apple Intelligence will not be available in EU countries due to ongoing regulatory issues.

Among the notable new features of iOS 18 are:

  • Passwords app: A dedicated app for securely storing credentials.
  • Improved Messages app: New formatting options and support for RCS to enhance compatibility with Android devices.
  • Organized photos library: A redesign allowing personalized photo collections and layout adjustments.
  • Personalized home screen layout: Options to rearrange apps and customize their appearance.

Other significant updates include enhancements to core apps like Maps, Calendar, and Safari. More details on these features can be found in reviews and hands-on previews of new Apple products such as the AirPods 4, Apple Watch Series 10, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Pro.

The updates for MacOS Sequoia, iPadOS 18, WatchOS 11, and visionOS 2 will be available starting September 16. The update schedule for tvOS 18 has not been officially announced but is close to final release stages. For AirPods, Apple has pushed new firmware to prepare for the upcoming iOS 18 enhancements, though some features, like the hearing aid functionality, may be released later despite recent FDA approval.
