In recent weeks, much of online discussion has centered around Mario Kart World, largely due to controversial opinions. While the flagship launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2 is promising in terms of features, the unprecedented $80 price has sparked debate. Despite this, Nintendo has encouraged fans to withhold judgment until the Mario Kart World Nintendo Direct livestream. During a 15-minute Direct event, Nintendo revealed key aspects of the game.
Nintendo is emphasizing social interactions in this installment. Players can freely navigate the open world with friends online, discovering shortcuts or capturing group photos with the new Photo Mode. The Nintendo Switch 2’s built-in webcam allows users to see their friends during races, both online and local, as it can recognize up to four faces in one frame. Additionally, the GameChat feature was highlighted, offering open-mic voice chat and screen-sharing, although the latter remains somewhat choppy.
A significant addition to Mario Kart World is the open-world map connecting various tracks, including classic ones. Questions have arisen about what activities are available beyond racing. Nintendo provided some insights, showcasing optional challenges that can reveal new strategies or shortcuts. Rewards for completing these challenges remain unclear, but hidden coins and panels, whose purposes are yet to be revealed, add intrigue to the Free Roam aspect.
Another exciting feature involves food items, which unlock costumes for the characters. Different meals found on tracks can change a character’s appearance, uncovering themed costumes for subsequent use. Examples include Peach in a kimono after consuming sushi and Mario in cowboy attire after eating western-inspired food. This provides additional motivation to explore the game’s world.
These were among the new details unveiled in the Mario Kart World Direct. The game is set to release on June 5 for the Nintendo Switch 2.
