Marvel Studios is preparing to launch an awards campaign for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” aiming for recognition in categories such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars. According to a report from Variety, the studio is targeting the comedy categories at the Golden Globes, reminiscent of the two nominations the original “Deadpool” secured for Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actor for Ryan Reynolds. This time, the studio plans to push Hugh Jackman in the supporting actor category to avoid split votes with Reynolds.
“Deadpool & Wolverine,” by virtue of its theatrical release, is already eligible for various awards including the Critics’ Choice, Screen Actors Guild, Writers Guild, and Academy Awards. However, eligibility alone does not ensure nominations; a focused campaign is crucial for drawing the attention of voters and emphasizing specific candidates or elements of the film.
With a gross of $1.3 billion, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the highest-grossing R-rated film ever, which virtually guarantees a nomination, and possibly a win, in the new “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement” category at the Golden Globes. It is also likely to receive technical accolades throughout the awards season. However, securing nominations for categories such as Best Actor, Best Writer, or Best Director would be a notable accomplishment.
The practice of launching awards campaigns is common among major films, even those with slim chances of nomination, often as a final promotional effort before the film fades from public view. In this context, Marvel and Disney’s expenditure to secure nominations for “Deadpool & Wolverine” may seem improbable, yet it represents their best shot at gaining recognition.
Regarding the Golden Globes, there is optimism due to the separation of the Comedy and Drama categories. Whether Hugh Jackman will receive a supporting actor nomination from the Academy remains uncertain, though it is not entirely outside the realm of possibility.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” continues to play in theaters and is scheduled for digital release on October 1 and 4K/Blu-ray on October 22.
