MediaTek has officially unveiled its latest flagship mobile chipset, the Dimensity 9400, featuring expected annual specification updates as well as several forward-looking features.
The Dimensity 9400 is constructed using a 3nm process, rendering it “up to 40 percent more power-efficient” than its predecessor, the Dimensity 9300. This new chipset incorporates one Arm Cortex-X925 core running at 3.62GHz, alongside three Arm Cortex-X4 cores and four Cortex-A720 cores, technologies that were introduced at last year’s Computex. According to MediaTek, this combination enhances single-core performance by 35 percent and multi-core performance by 28 percent compared to the 9300. The chipset also features Arm’s 12-core Immortalis-G925 GPU, offering 40 percent faster ray tracing capabilities.
Beyond the standard features, MediaTek’s eighth-generation NPU supports training specific categories of lightweight AI models directly on the device, achieving “80 percent faster large language model prompt performance.” Additionally, it facilitates AI video generation and delivers a developer framework for creating agentic applications—AI that can perform tasks on behalf of users. This represents a potential significant advancement in the realm of AI, with major players like Apple and Rabbit exploring its implementation.
The Dimensity 9400 is expected to be available on the market in the fourth quarter of this year. Historically, MediaTek’s high-end chips are commonly found in flagship phones from Chinese manufacturers such as Vivo and Oppo, suggesting that the 9400 may not be widely available in the US, where Qualcomm chipsets are prevalent in popular Android flagship devices.
