Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition final, ruling out Call of Duty on Xbox

Date:

Microsoft has officially welcomed Activision Blizzard and its teams to Xbox, marking its largest acquisition in history. The deal solidifies Microsoft’s entry into the gaming industry, positioning it as the third-largest gaming company by revenue. Xbox chief Phil Spencer expressed excitement about the collaboration, emphasizing their commitment to bringing the joy and community of gaming to more people. Microsoft plans to add Activision Blizzard’s popular games to Xbox Game Pass, promising updates on availability in the coming months. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has agreed to remain in place to aid in the transition until the end of 2023.

With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft has not only made its biggest-ever push into gaming but has also become a publishing powerhouse. The addition of more than nine game studios from the Blizzard side and over 11 locations for mobile gaming King side has significantly expanded Microsoft’s portfolio. This move allows them to bring beloved franchises to Xbox Game Pass, increasing their value proposition to gamers. The company’s plan to empower everyone, facilitate innovation, and create a culture of inclusivity underscores their commitment to the gaming community.

Although specific details on game availability are yet to be announced, Microsoft’s ambition to grow its subscriber base for Xbox Game Pass remains clear. The company had reported 25 million subscribers at the time of the original announcement in January 2022. While there has been no update on subscription numbers since then, Microsoft aims to capitalize on popular titles from Activision Blizzard’s catalog to attract even more players. With the addition of over 8,500 Activision employees, Microsoft’s transformation into a global gaming force is undeniable.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick’s continued involvement in the transition demonstrates a collaborative effort between the two companies. His commitment to assisting with the integration highlights the shared vision of a smooth and successful merger. With Kotick staying on as the CEO of ABK under the leadership of Phil Spencer, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard are poised to leverage their respective strengths and create a compelling gaming experience for their teams and players alike.
