The famous hardware repair channel Northridge Fix has revealed that NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs are still suffering from the persistent “12VHPWR” connector issues. Despite being in global markets for a year, the problematic 12VHPWR connectors are still melting and burning, with the repairman receiving a shocking “20 to 25 graphics cards per week” due to this issue. He has even purchased a “dedicated respirator mask” to avoid inhaling the toxic fumes that come with repairing these cards.
As a reminder, the trouble extends across different models and is not limited to a specific vendor. So, caution is advised, with the repairman suggesting that the problem stems from the connectors not being fully plugged into the graphics card, resulting in poor contact force. Despite the earlier move by PCI-SIG and NVIDIA’s claim of “User-Error”, the issue continues to plague users. Although the latest production batch of GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs has adopted a more “reliable” 12V-2×6 connector design to combat this problem, the majority of the cards still use the older design, necessitating extra care.
The repairman also disclosed that companies like Cablemod have issued a fix for the burn and melting issues caused by adapters and angled connectors, though users could still end up with an expensive paperweight if their cards are not fixed from a reputed hardware repair shop.
