Pixar has a long history of featuring alien characters in its films. Iconic among these are the green, claw-worshipping alien toys from Toy Story, while Lightyear introduced audiences to numerous hostile alien lifeforms. The studio’s upcoming film, Elio, is set to include the most Pixar aliens in any of their films yet.
Elio is directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina. The narrative follows a young boy named Elio, voiced by Yonas Kibreab, who dreams of being abducted by aliens. This wish comes true when he is transported to a gathering of aliens known as the Communiverse, where he inadvertently becomes the ambassador for the human race.
During his adventure, Elio befriends an alien named Glordon, voiced by Remy Edgerly. This intergalactic creature, resembling a mix between a slug and a lobster, appears to be a kind-hearted alien. Glordon even offers Elio refuge in his mouth to escape a lava flow. However, Glordon’s father, Lord Grigon, who is voiced by Brad Garrett, seems to have a more menacing disposition, as indicated by the film’s trailer, and appears to be intent on attacking the Communiverse. The story follows Elio, Glordon, and others as they potentially unite to thwart Lord Grigon’s plans.
The film also features performances by Academy Award winner Zoe Saldaña as Elio’s Aunt Olga, Jameela Jamil as Ambassador Questa, and Shirley Henderson as a character named OOOOO. Elio is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 20.
