The first American-manufactured Polestar electric vehicles have made their debut on the roads. The Swedish automaker announced on Friday that it has delivered the initial batch of Polestar 3 SUVs to customers in the United States and Canada. This development is in line with the incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act, which President Biden signed in 2022. The act encourages automakers to produce EVs domestically by offering tax credits to both companies and consumers.
Polestar initiated production of the Polestar 3 in the United States in August at its Ridgeville, South Carolina facility. These vehicles are intended to cater to both North American and European markets, supplementing the company’s established production operations in Chengdu, China.
The automaker expects that deliveries of the Polestar 3 to American and Canadian markets will increase significantly in the coming weeks. Prospective customers can experience driving the vehicle by visiting one of the company’s Polestar Spaces, which are upscale showrooms located in or near major US cities.
The Polestar 3 is positioned as a significant step for the company, aiming to expand its appeal from niche markets to a broader consumer base. Engadget’s Tim Stevens evaluated the vehicle last month and concluded that, aside from some initial software bugs, the SUV, which starts at $73,400, performs impressively.
