The traditional camera styling of the device features some plastic knurling on the body and around the lens. This aspect is where the plastic nature becomes most apparent, as it feels more like plastic imitating knurling rather than genuine knurling. It remains functional, though it may not be entirely pleasant to hold.
A significant improvement over the previous model is the redesigned lens, consistent with recent Instax releases. The lens twists to power on and further twisting enables close-focus mode. This mechanism is simple and intuitive, superior to the push lever approach of the Mini 40.
The lens also includes parallax correction, aiding in centering close-up images, including selfies, by adjusting the focus mark in the viewfinder. Additionally, a selfie mirror is positioned on the side of the lens.
The Mini 41 is compact, measuring 4.8 by 4 inches and 2.4 inches deep, and weighs just under a pound (15.1 ounces) including batteries and film. While it may not fit in a pants pocket, it is small enough for a jacket pocket. The camera operates on AA batteries, providing convenience. Purchasing a set of rechargeable AAs can eliminate the need for frequent battery replacement.
Images are ejected from the top of the camera and take approximately a minute and a half to develop. The automatic focus performs well, and the ability to switch between normal and close focus offers additional control. However, care should be taken to ensure the focus mode is correctly set, as errors occurred when incorrect settings were used.
