Insta360’s X-series 360-degree cameras have consistently led the market with their excellent video quality, user-friendly interface, and straightforward editing software. These features make them particularly accessible for beginners. The latest model, the Insta360 X5, continues this legacy by introducing larger sensors for enhanced video quality.
The X5 is considered a significant upgrade, offering improved video quality, longer battery life, and new features such as the PureVideo lowlight mode and interchangeable lenses, establishing it as a highly attractive option in the 360 camera market.
### New Features
The major advancement in the X5, and a compelling reason for existing X4 users to consider upgrading, is the inclusion of new twin 1/1.28-inch sensors. These sensors represent a significant improvement over the 1/2-inch sensors found in the X4. Despite the video specifications remaining largely unchanged at 8K 30 fps and 5.7K 60 fps, the larger sensors provide more detailed footage. This results in the most visually impressive footage produced by a 360 camera to date.
It is important to note that the 8K resolution pertains to the full 360-degree shot. When footage is framed within the app, the maximum export resolution is 4K. However, the 4K footage from the X5 is noticeably superior compared to the X4.
While the footage from the X5 is exceptional for a 360 camera, other newer action cameras may offer slightly better video quality. The unique advantage of a 360 camera lies in its ability to capture scenes from all directions, unlike Insta360’s traditional action cam, the Ace Pro 2. This feature makes 360 cameras ideal for activities like biking, skiing, or skateboarding, where framing choices can be made post-capture. Although historically this approach required a compromise in video quality, the X5 minimizes this trade-off considerably.
