At a time when many top soundbar manufacturers are focused on incorporating more features, Vizio has taken a minimalist approach with its latest Elevate soundbar, the SE 5.1.2. This model is notably minimalistic in its provision of inputs, lacks Wi-Fi streaming and smart features, and replaces a physical remote with a unified app. This reduction in features aims to offer a more budget-friendly option for consumers.
Despite the current economic climate, the Elevate SE delivers impressive Dolby Atmos and DTS:X 3D-audio performance for $500 or less. The sleek and stylish design includes features unlikely to be found in rival products at this price, such as a dedicated subwoofer and dual surround speakers. It also boasts the signature spinning side speakers from previous Elevate models, which can be oriented for stereo and traditional surround soundtracks or repositioned towards the ceiling to create an immersive 3D audio experience.
There are many choices for investing in audio equipment, ranging from network-ready standalone soundbars with high fidelity to comprehensive powered bookshelf speakers that offer multiple input options. However, few systems at a similar price point distribute sound as effectively as the Elevate SE, allowing users to enjoy a fully immersive experience.
The Elevate SE is packaged compactly, making it easy to transport into a home entertainment setup. The components include a fabric-wrapped main bar and uniquely shaped oval surround speakers. Notably, the package from Vizio does not include a remote control or basic setup instructions, at least in the review unit observed.
Instead, purchasers receive a QR code for accessing Vizio’s control app, alongside a box of accessories containing power cords, an HDMI cable, and the wires needed to connect the surround speakers to the pillar-shaped subwoofer. Setting up the system is straightforward; the bar and subwoofer pair automatically once plugged in, and labels on the surround speakers and color-coded cable ends guide proper configuration. The most challenging aspect is running the speaker cables through the room, though Vizio provides cables of ample length to accommodate most arrangements.
