Nintendo enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the upcoming release of Nintendo’s new console, the Nintendo Switch 2. In the recent Nintendo Direct event livestream, detailed information about the console’s features and specifications was revealed.
Release Date and Price:
The official launch date for the Switch 2 is set for June 5, 2025. While Nintendo did not disclose the price during the event, it later confirmed that the console would be available in the U.S. for $450. Additionally, a console bundle, including a game, is planned for release.
Specifications:
The Switch 2 boasts a larger screen of 7.9 inches while maintaining the same thickness as the original Switch. It offers double the pixels, supporting 120 Hz gameplay with a vivid LCD screen and HDR support. The internal storage has increased eightfold to 256GB, and the console includes noise-cancelling microphone capabilities.
Design Updates:
The device features two USB-C ports for accessories and charging and supports up to 4K resolution output when docked. While game cards retain the same size, they are now red to distinguish them from those of the original Switch and have a faster reading speed. The Switch 2 requires microSD Express cards for additional storage.
GameChat and Camera:
A standout feature introduced is GameChat, a video chat function that allows communication with other players while gaming. This feature will be free until March 2026 before requiring a paid membership. Complementing this is the Switch 2 Camera, which provides video chat functionality and enhanced in-game interactivity, utilizing voice and body controls.
Joy-Con 2 and Controllers:
The Joy-Con 2 controllers feature a new "C" button for managing GameChat functions, alongside larger control sticks and SL/SR buttons. The controllers attach magnetically to the console and can be used like a computer mouse in certain games. A new Pro controller includes an audio jack and programmable buttons.
GameShare Functionality:
The new GameShare feature allows users to play the same game locally on multiple Switch devices, sharing games with up to three other systems on the same network without needing multiple copies of the game.
Switch 2 Games:
Nintendo announced several in-house and third-party games for the Switch 2. The flagship title, "Mario Kart World," stands out with its open-world format, supporting 24 players, and features such as rail grinding and weather changes. Other titles include "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment," "Kirby AirRiders," and "Donkey Kong Bananza."
Additional Features and Game Editions:
Nintendo also unveiled Switch 2 Editions of popular games, offering enhanced features and gameplay. Titles include "Super Mario Party Jamboree Switch 2 Edition" and "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," now equipped with Zelda Notes for enhanced interactivity.
Nintendo Switch Online Services:
Nintendo Switch Online membership will be available on Switch 2, providing access to classic games from previous consoles. An additional Plus Expansion Pack offers games from the Nintendo 64, GameCube, and SEGA Genesis.
Third-Party Titles:
Numerous third-party games were also announced, such as "Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition," "Hogwarts Legacy," and "Final Fantasy VII Remake," enhancing the console’s game library for diverse player preferences.
