With the addition of extra downward force, the forces balance out to zero by increasing the normal force. Consequently, the frictional force becomes greater, resulting in increased acceleration. Instead of achieving a maximum acceleration of 6 to 7 meters per second squared, much higher values—potentially 15 or even 20 m/s²—can now be reached. For instance, the McMurtry Spéirling demonstrated in a video accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in an impressive 1.4 seconds, illustrating this concept.

The concept of using fans to enhance performance is not novel. In 1978, the Brabham BT46B utilized this method to secure a win at the Formula 1 Swedish Grand Prix, though it was swiftly banned. However, the principle of increasing downward force persists. Modern F1 cars cleverly direct airflow through their bodies to create a similar “ground effect,” officially attributed to engine cooling needs.

While these airflow systems contribute to engine cooling, they primarily aim to generate low pressure under the car, drawing it closer to the ground. A recent review highlighted the new McLaren W1, a road car embodying this feature—a significant selling point. Priced at $2.6 million, McLaren plans to produce only 399 units.

This enhanced acceleration capability not only boosts speed but also improves deceleration and sharpens turning ability, as all these actions involve forms of acceleration. The downforce mechanism transforms a fast car into an exceptionally fast one, catering to those who desire such performance levels.
