TikTok is introducing support for ALT text specifically for photo posts, aiming to enhance the platform’s accessibility for individuals with visual and cognitive impairments. The platform indicates that this new feature allows creators to add descriptive text to photos, enabling users who utilize screen readers to comprehend visual content through spoken descriptions.
The company informed TechCrunch via email that creators have the option to include ALT text either during the photo upload process or after a post has already been published.
With this feature, TikTok aligns itself with several other social media platforms that offer ALT text capabilities, such as Instagram, Facebook, X (previously known as Twitter), Reddit, Mastodon, and Tumblr, among others.
The introduction of ALT text adds to TikTok’s existing array of accessibility tools, which already includes features like auto-generated captions for video content and the ability to modify text size within the application.
