Electric cargo bicycles are available in two configurations: front-loader bikes and midtail or longtail bikes. Front-loader bikes, often referred to as bakfiets or Long Johns, feature a cargo box positioned between the rider and the front wheel. On the other hand, midtail or longtail bikes have an extended rear end designed to carry additional passengers or equipment.
Each design has its own advantages and disadvantages. It has been observed that larger riders tend to prefer front-loader bikes. These bikes are versatile, capable of transporting children as well as large items like yard equipment and tools. However, they require ample storage space, such as a garage, along with a reliable locking system. Front-loader bikes can be challenging to maneuver, particularly over curbs or uneven surfaces, and they tend to feel less stable at lower speeds.
For smaller or lighter individuals, midtail or longtail bikes might be more appropriate, as they handle similarly to regular bicycles. However, the cargo weight is centered on the back end and positioned higher, which can cause concerns about stability. Owners of longtail bikes, like one who expressed a preference for their maneuverability, find it slightly cumbersome to ensure all items are securely strapped to a rack or stored in a pannier. It is advisable for interested buyers to schedule an appointment at a local bike shop to test various models before making a purchase.
