Indian journalist Fazil Khan dies in Manhattan fire sparked by lithium battery.


A 27-year-old Indian journalist, Fazil Khan, tragically lost his life in a fire incident in Manhattan, New York. The fire, caused by a lithium-ion battery, erupted in a residential building in Harlem, resulting in injuries to approximately 17 other individuals. Khan, who worked for The Hechinger Report, focused on exploring innovation and inequality in education. The Consulate General of India in New York expressed their condolences and assured assistance in repatriating Khan’s remains to his family in India.

The fire originated in a six-story residential building, with victims trapped on the fifth floor. Despite the efforts of the New York City Fire Department, 18 individuals were affected, with four in critical condition. Joseph Pfeifer, the Fire Department’s first deputy commissioner, confirmed the tragic loss of one individual, later identified as Fazil Khan, who succumbed to injuries at the hospital. The Hechinger Report mourned the passing of their colleague, remembering Khan as a great journalist and person.

Khan’s untimely death serves as a poignant reminder of the risks journalists face in pursuit of their work.
