The Irish government is hiring two additional commissioners to lead the Data Protection Commission (DPC), the body responsible for overseeing tech companies’ compliance with European Union privacy rules. The DPC has the power to impose fines of up to 4% of global annual turnover for violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The new commissioners will join current commissioner Helen Dixon, who will become chair under the new structure. The move comes as the DPC faces criticism for its enforcement of GDPR on tech giants, with privacy experts accusing it of not properly interrogating platform power and protecting citizens’ rights.
